Things To Know

May I sit in on a class to observe?

We don’t offer sit-ins for classes, as we work hard to protect the trust and sense of safety within each ensemble. Having an observer in the room can sometimes feel distracting or intimidating for students as they take risks, explore, and grow. That said, we’d still love to connect with you. You’re welcome to attend one of our Actors and Artists Meetups, where you can talk with current students and teaching artists, email us to be connected with a current student to hear about their experience, or join us for a showcase to see the work in action.

We’re happy to help you find the best way to get a feel for the program!

What happens if I miss a class?
Life happens, and we understand! If you miss a class, you may come in 20 minutes early to your next class to make up the material one-on-one that you missed with your teaching artist.

What to bring to class

  • Refillable Water Bottle

  • We will provide you with a folder to keep your Playground essentials in, please bring this folder to and from class. If you already have a Playground folder from a previous class please bring it with you.

  • A notebook or jounral to take notes in.

  • Wear clothes you feel comfortable moving around in.

Notify us if…

  • You are unable to make it. We will worry about you! If you are unable to make it to class, no problem. We can find a way to ensure you make up for the missed material.

  • You will be late. In the professional world it is not only a courtesy to let your Stage Manager or production know that you will be late but it’s mandatory. To get you in the habit of that, give us a quick text or email if you will be more than 5 minutes late.

When are classes?

The Playground offers Acting Technique classes during our Fall, Winter, and Spring sessions, with most classes running 6 to 8 weeks depending on the course. Throughout the year, we also host workshops and masterclasses for deeper dives into specific skills. During session breaks, we offer a weeklong Winter Acting Intensive and a Summer Acting Intensive for adults, along with our Summer Camp for younger performers. In addition, we host monthly Adult Improv classes year-round.

Who is the program good for?

The Playground is for anyone who feels drawn to acting, no matter where they’re starting from. Our students include professional working actors, BFA-trained performers, complete beginners, and people returning to acting after years away. Whether you’re building your creative foundation for the first time or reconnecting with it, our program is designed to meet you where you are and support your growth.

A special note for beginners:

Dear You,

If you’re reading this and feeling unsure about taking the next step, you’re not alone. Almost everyone who signs up pauses right here, wondering if they’re “ready,” if they belong, or if this is the right moment. That hesitation is completely human.

Our classes are designed for people just like you, with small, supportive groups where no one is expected to have it all figured out. Everyone walks in feeling a little nervous and a little excited, and that shared feeling is what makes the room feel safe and welcoming so quickly.

Signing up is the biggest leap. Showing up is the bravest part. After that, you’ll be met with kindness, laughter, and a community that wants you to succeed.

Whenever you’re ready, we’d love to meet you.

Warmly,

The Playground Acting Program Team â€‹â€‹â€‹
